Disquietude I
Disquietude I

'Disquietude I' is part of an ongoing series of manually distressed 35mm negative images with minor digital manipulations. Each image is created and distressed based off of my personal experience struggling with anxiety and depression.

In 'Disquietude I' the film negatives were soaked in whiskey prior to being exposed creating a disruptive environment in which the model exists. The break in the middle serves as an uncomfortable break in the image. This break represents society’s uneasiness with mental health and the ways in which our society tries to distance itself from the fact that anxiety and depression exist.

The headdress represents the mind and the sharp negative thoughts that coincide with panic and anxiety, while the eyes represent society’s judgement towards the mental health community.

Disquietude II

'Disquietude II' was shot on distressed 35mm film with minor digital manipulations. The second piece in my 'Disquietude II’ captures what if feels like to experience an anxiety while living in our world today. At the top of the image, the mind is clouded and can hardly make itself seen or heard. In the middle the figure appears to be trying to break free, attempting to pull itself from anxiety’s grip. Finally at the bottom the figure appears serene, being represented the way society expects them to be.

The third piece in 'Disquietude', captures the exhaustion that comes after a period of distress. Many times as anxiety loosens it's grip on you, your energy levels crumble. The figure appearing to slowly yet peacefully fall towards the ground, represents that collapse of energy. The environment is also nearly tranquil, while the anxious feelings, represented in red, begin to bubble and dissipate.

Red

'Red' is a continued exploration of color by scanning black and white negatives as color negatives. This piece was also an experiment in using two images shot one after the other as a diptych, rather than separate images. Allowing a narrative to form by creating a scene where the viewer reads the image from left to right.

'Disconnect' is one of my earlier bodies of work meant as an exploration of film distressing. These images were shot on black and white film, then scanned in as color negatives. This allowed the image to come to life in washes of greens, purples and blues.

Efflorescence

'Efflorescence' is a series that surrounds women with self love. Each woman in the series was asked to give a description of what they love most about themselves. This was then translated using Victorian Flower Language into a plant or flower that represented that love. I then took each girl’s portrait using 35mm film and double exposures to envelop them with their personal self love and appreciation.

Around the world today, women struggle with openly loving themselves without being labeled as vain or obsessive. Women are constantly told how they should act, look and represent themselves in order to be accepted in society. I think it is important as a women to be reminded that self appreciation and love is needed in order to live a healthy life.

In this particular image, Chelsea's description translated into a cactus which symbolizes warmth.
